TILES OF OUR TIMES

Tiles of our Times is a collage and installation project completed while on a three week artist's residency at ArTerra in Tondela, Portugal during March 2022. The paper-based collages are all 14 x 14 cm (5.5 x 5.5"), the size of a traditional Portugeuse azulejo (ceramic tile).

The collages were scanned and printed onto adhesive-backed, exterior-grade vinyl material for stickering in public places. Examples of some collages are shown, as are images of 'in situ' installations.

The collages have integrity as individual collage pieces but are intended to work in multiples – tiled together in a grid like Portuguese tiles on houses, public buildings and churches. The tiles's composition has a division into quarters – typical of many azulejos – that allows for turning them 90 degrees and furthering the possible patterns.
